Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO)

is a public sector undertaking (PSU) established in the year 1965. The organization enjoys the recognition of being the first public sector enterprise of India. It started the production of aluminium in the year 1975. Bharat Aluminium Co. Ltd. (BALCO) is partly integrated Aluminium Company, which has its own Refineries, Captive Bauxite Mines, Smelters and Captive Power Plants. The captive power plant with the capacity of 270 MW was built to provide power supply to the unit. BALCO is involved in the processes of the four major activities like Refining, Mining, Fabrication, and Smelting. BALCO has the credit of being the first Aluminium Industry in India to produce alloy rods. These alloy rods are very important, as they are a feedstock for all Aluminium Alloy Conductors, required for the lines used in power transmission. Bharat Aluminium Company Limited was a public sector organization and was owned 100% by Government of India, till the year 2001. But in 2001, the Government of India disinvested 51% of the equity of the company and management to the Sterlite Industries Limited. Within 41 years of its establishment Bharat Aluminium Company Limited has expanded its production capacity of aluminium to 200,000 tonnes annually and the smelting capacity to 50,000 tonnes per annum. The growth of the company can also be assessed from its expansion plans in fabrication facilities by installing integrated hot and cold rolling mills, three Properzi Rod Mills, captive power plant with the capacity of 810 MW and three pig casting machines.
